Earlswood Lake Therapies - Questionboard

So this is today's question from a client:

tonyg asked:
I suffer with ear wax build up, do i need to put oil drops in before candle treatment?

No definitely not, the purpose of ear candling is to allow the gentle chimney effect which is created through the burning of the candle to do the work, releasing any wax build up that may have occurred.

More than one treatment of Hopi Ear Candles may be required depending on the level of build up in the ears.

Below is some more information for you:

What is Hopi Ear Candling?

Also known as Thermo Auricular Therapy, which is an ancient form of therapy that has been practised by people worldwide.  It's name is derived from the Hopi Indians of North Arizona and its meaning is 'peaceful people'.

Hopi Ear Candling is a very safe and therapeutic therapy, with many benefits.

Contra indications for Hopi Ear Candling

Although many can be treated with Hopi Ear Candles there are a few cases where they should not be used, these are known as Contra Indications.  For Ear Candling they are as follows:
  • Ear infections
  • Any inflammation of the ear
  • Any surgery within the last 3 months
  • Lack of ear drum
  • Perforation of the ear drum
  • Grommets, drains or ventilation tubes fitted
  • Auricular cysts
  • Any known allergies to candle wax
If you do not have any or suffer from any of the above conditions then there is no reason that you should not have Hopi Ear Candling.  The number of treatment required does depend on a number of factors which include:  the age of the person, the length of time they have had the condition, and what condition the person is suffering from.

In general the older the person and the longer they have had the condition for the more treatments tend to be required before there is a noticeable improvement, and some conditions are much more treatable than others.

For a problem that may have come on suddenly, for examole, a cold or blocked nose, it is safe to have treatments up to twice a day for the first 2 days and then 3 or 4 over the next 10 days.

Long terms issues, such as hearing loss or tinnitus, treatments can be given 3 times in the first week, twice in the second week and one in the third week.

A Hopi Ear Candling treatment can be used as a prevention for further issues occurring.

What are the benefits of  Hopi Ear Candling?

There are many benefits to having Hopi Ear Candling and a variety of conditions that can be treated effectively some of these include:
  • Tinnitus
  • Glue Ear
  • Sinusitus
  • General hearing loss
  • Excessive ear wax build up
  • Hayfever and rhinitus
  • Colds
  • Tension headaches
  • Meniere's disease
  • Travel sickness
There is no scientific evidence that Hopi Ear Candling can "cure" any of these conditions however, there are a growing number of people who claim that the treatment has been a positive benefit to their issue.

Children may have this treatment providing they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and they do not have any of the contra indications mentioned above.

What is the process of Hopi Ear Candling?

The client lies on a couch (no de-robing nessecary) on their side, and the actual ear candle process involves using a specially designed hollow candle which is inserted gently but firmly into the ear canal. The candle is then lit and the candle then acts like a chimney drawing out the impurities from within the ear area. Because of the rising air within the ear canal the ear drum gets a gentle massage which also assists with regulating ear pressure.

What to Expect During a Hopi Ear Candling Treatment

The therapist will carry out a full consultation with you asking a number of questions regarding any issues that you or the child may be having with the ears.  The consultation is required not only for Insurance purposes but also to ensure that Hopi Ear Candling is a safe treatment for you or the child to have.

You will be placed in a comfortable position on a couch laying down on your side. The Hopi Ear Candle will be lit and placed gently but firmly just inside the ear canal.  The candle will be held in place by the therapist - the candle is made in a way that ensures the ash does not fall onto the client during the treatment.

You may experience a fire crackling sound as the candle burns or maybe some popping in the ear, but not painful. It is a very relaxing experience.

When the candle has burned down to the pre marked safe area it is gently and carefully removed from the ear and extunguished, the entire process is repeated on the other ear.

Once both ears have been treated you will be left to relax for a few minutes before receiving a soothing sinus or auricalar massage, although this part is down to the individual therapists.
